Spring is in the air and next comes summer. Even though April showers bring May flowers, they also bring other unwanted headaches such as seepage! Here are 4 things U.S. Waterproofing can do to help you get your home ready for summer.

  1. Sealing foundation cracks. Most times cracks found in a foundation are normal and a part of the home’s life cycle. Some reasons cracks show up in foundations are settlement, drainage issues, poor soil compaction, frost from those cold months amongst many others. Basically, if you are a homeowner or looking to buy a home, note that foundation cracks are almost inevitable. Why should you consider waterproofing these cracks before summer? Well, the answer is simple. Seepage. Water is fluid and will find its way into your home anyway it can. Even a hairline crack can allow some seepage.
  2. Encapsulating your crawl space. Why is this important you may ask? Air circulates the house from the basement. In the summer it gets warmer outside and warm air and moisture can create mold.  If air circulates from the basement to your living space and there is mold in your crawlspace, well then, you would be breathing in mold spores! Wet and musty basements can also lead to wood rot and fungus. Not to mention pests such as mice, rats, termites, carpenter ants, you get the idea. Want more info? Here are 3 great reasons you should encapsulate and waterproof your crawlspace.
  3. Proper yard drainage. This consists of diverting as much water away from the foundation as possible. If you don’t have good drainage, then water could end up pooling around your foundation and making its way into your basement. There are a number of things that can contribute to poor yard drainage  such as improperly installed or maintained gutters and downspouts, a badly graded yard that directs water toward your foundation walls, and landscaping that may retain water or block its flow. The good news, all three of these factors can be fixed! A waterproofing company can install underground downspouts. The purpose of this is to provide a path for water to go even further away from your foundation to a small catch basin called a “Bubbler Pot”. Once pressure builds, water forces the lid to open, allowing water to be distributed evenly across your lawn. You can attach a downspout extension but leaving that on top of the lawn is not ideal as it is visibly an eye sore as well as a tripping hazard. A landscaping company can fix any bad grading as well as the landscaping if it is blocking or retaining water!
  4. Repair settled concrete. Cracked and sunken driveways can present a variety of problems. Driveways pitched toward the house cause rainwater to be directed toward the foundation. This excessive water causes basement seepage and structural issues if not corrected quickly. The most common and easy way to fix this is with Polyurethane Concrete Raising.
