The purpose of your gutter system is to capture water from the roof and divert it harmlessly away from the foundation. Having excess water next to the foundation can cause foundation wall cracks and possible structural damage. Unfortunately, most gutter systems installed during original construction are minimal in size and become easily clogged by debris as surrounding trees mature.

What is the most common problem with gutters?

Gutters are undersized and this leads to clogging. All gutter systems require routine maintenance by the homeowner. The more trees around your home the more frequent the maintenance is needed. If you don’t have large mature trees you still have to reseal the joints in the gutter system. Gutter end caps, corners and downspout connectors typically require resealing about every 5 years.

What are some signs that gutters need to be replaced?

Signs that your gutters need to be replaced can vary by geographic location. Following is a list of what we find to be most common:

Overflows during heavy rains
Bent/dented materials
Gutter is pulling away from house
Seam on back of downspout split
Vegetation growing in gutters
Downspouts completely filled with debris
Aesthetically unpleasing

What size gutters should I put on my house?

Most “builder grade” original gutter systems consist of 5 in. wide K-Style gutters with 2 in. x 3 in. downspouts. We strongly recommend an “oversized” 6 in. wide gutter with 3 in. x 4 in. downspouts.

A 6 in. gutter will handle almost 50% more water than the original 5 in. gutter. Most importantly, if installed properly, this oversized system will allow most debris to flow out of the system, reducing the amount of routine cleaning needed. This allows the gutter system to perform in the heaviest of rainfalls.

Are bigger gutters easier to keep clean?

Absolutely, bigger gutters are significantly easier to keep clean. First, you’ll find that a larger gutter system is almost self-cleaning, as it allows the debris to be carried away by the higher volume of flowing water. This results in greater intervals between manually cleaning.

How often should gutters be cleaned?

This is a great question that depends on your surroundings. If you live in a newer subdivision with smaller trees, your gutter cleaning schedule may be less often. However, if you live in an area with mature trees, near or around you, you will need to clean your gutters minimally twice a year if not more.

Are gutter guards a good idea?

There are many types of gutter guards, all of which sit either atop or inside the gutter. Their sole purpose is to keep debris out while letting the water in. There are many systems out there that do this with normal rains.

It’s hard to find one that really works. Understand, you need your gutter system most during heavy torrential rains. Unfortunately, that is where gutter guard type systems tend to fail as large amounts of water cascade over them.
