Keep Water Away from Foundation to Prevent Structural Foundation Damage
Most homeowners understand that water outside their home can easily turn into water inside their home – in the basement specifically. Many, however, don’t understand the extent to which this happens or how easy it is to prevent.
Take rain water, for example. Rain falls on the roof and runs down to the gutters on the eaves. The gutters then channel the water to a downspout on the corner and the water magically disappears, right?
Well, no. The water that enters a downspout has to exit the downspout somewhere and that is usually on the ground right next to the foundation. This concentration of water quickly soaks into the ground around the foundation and increases the pressure that causes cracks and seepage.
There are remedies from the hardware store, of course, including splash blocks and stubby plastic extenders but, as basement waterproofing expert Barry Schilling points out in this brief video, a professionally installed underground extension/bubbler pot system is the only thing that can be counted on to keep water from going directly from your roof to your basement.
